It is critical to understand the condition and its causes for each individual dyslexic. |
Facts! Facts! Facts! Your can never have enough facts! |
|
Each individual with dyslexia is unique. To treat a dyslexic efficiently and effectively it is critical to: · Determine if dyslexia is present, what type the individual is suffering from, and its severity. · Identify the precise causes of the dyslexia and its effects on the individual. · Take the specific corrective actions needed to treat both the causes and effects. |
|
The Dyslexia Assessment Battery (D.A.B.) is given to all prospective clients. This battery consists of approximately twelve tests which vary according to age. These same tests are used and recognized by medical, psychological and educational professionals. For the possibly dyslexic child, we refer to this assessment as “measuring” as opposed to testing. For the dyslexic child, “test” can be a frightening word.
The D.A.B. will give a definitive diagnosis of dyslexia. If the client is dyslexic, the assessment will also tell the level of severity for which there are four levels. It will also determine the kind of dyslexia present: dyseidetic, dysphonetic, or dysphoneidetic. Additionally, the assessment will pinpoint the phonological and cognitive weaknesses that are driving each individual’s dyslexia. The dyslexic’s reading, writing, spelling and fluency are also measured. The entire battery takes approximately three hours to administer.
Within ten days of the assessment, the results of the testing are provided to the family of the individual who was assessed. This assessment, in addition to providing a clinical diagnosis, will also outline a program for reversing the causes and effects of the dyslexia. The program will include a specific time frame and will recommend temporary accommodations if they are appropriate.
The D.A.B. is also used to re-evaluate individuals in the Dyslexia Institutes of America program for the purpose of monitoring. A complete list of the tests used is available upon request.
