Treating Dyslexics! “One Person at a Time” |
At the Dyslexia Institutes of America, an individualized therapy plan is formulated for each client. This individual plan is based on the results of the diagnostic assessment. This plan is specific to that client’s “condition” and “causes” and is designed to “correct” the dyslexic’s condition. The client will follow this continually monitored plan throughout his/her therapy. As a client at the Dyslexia Institutes of America, each student attends a two-hour block of time once a week. Therapy is reinforced with home therapy outside the clinic. Two Areas are Simultaneously Addressed in Therapy: Cognitive: The client will understand the “linguistic logic” underlying word formations and patterns such as the basic rules of syllabication. The client will also be able to demonstrate that understanding while writing or decoding words. The main focus is on retaining and retrieving information. Alphabetic/Phonetic: Sound-symbol associations along with linguistic rules and generalizations are introduced in a linguistically logical, understandable order. The essence of the phonetic approach is to make letter-to-sound correlation as simple and comprehensive as possible. All Therapy Components Are Designed To Be Specific to an individual’s needs and goals. Measurable, so that progress can be tracked accurately and often. Action oriented so that the dyslexic is doing something to reach his/her goals and seeing progress. Realistic and Relevant so that each individual is fairly challenged with appropriate materials. Time specific, so that there is a beginning and end to each component and the program. |

Every 48 hours of therapy each individual is reassessed to determine progress in: · Phonological Causes · Cognitive Deficits · Phonological Effects (reading / writing / spelling / fluency etc.)
Each individual therapy component is evaluated: · Weekly for progress and performance by local staff in conjunction with the parents. · Monthly by both local and national staff. · Therapy management also includes a review of temporary accommodations for both school and home. |
