Phonological Causes

· Phonological Processing – the ability to use the sound structure of one’s oral  language to process both written and oral language.  Recent research has shown that a deficit in phonological processing is a key aspect of dyslexia.

· Phonological Awareness – the ability to perceive and mentally manipulate the sound structure of the oral language.

· Phonological Memory – the ability to store auditory information in working     memory for a very short period of time as it is received and to refresh that           information for longer storage.

Secondary Deficits

· Visual-Motor Integration – the ability to coordinate visual perception and finger-hand movements          so as to reproduce visual information.

· Visual Perception – the ability of the brain to obtain accurate and meaningful    information from          what is seen.

· Visual and Auditory Sequential Memory – the ability to store and recall information in its          correct       sequential order.  A deficit in sequential memory may occur in the visual, the    auditory,          or both modalities.

· Short-term Visual and Auditory Memory – the part of memory where information that has been          received visually or auditorily  is processed and organized for transfer to long-term memory.

· Long-term Visual and Auditory Memory – the ability to store and retrieve information in memory          over a long period of time.

Phonological Effects

· Word Attack – the process of sounding out words using phonics rules and    knowledge of          syllables.

· Reading Decoding – the process of reading single words without any context clues.

· Spelling (Encoding) – the process of translating auditory language into written code.

· Writing – the process of representing language in a textual medium through the use of a set of          signs or symbols (known as a writing system)

· Fluency - the rate, accuracy, comprehension, and overall reading fluency that an individual          possesses.
